His abilities were said to include exorcising malevolent spirits, commanding elements, and taming wild beasts .

One of his most famous feats was subduing Kalliyankattu Neeli, a fearsome yakshi (vampire spirit) terrorizing the region. With his wit and magic, Kathanar trapped the spirit, transforming her into a servant .
