July 13, 2011, was a day that will forever be etched in the memories of Mumbaikars. The city, known for its vibrant streets and bustling markets, was shaken to its core by a series of coordinated bomb blasts that ripped through the crowded streets of Opera House, Zaveri Bazaar, and Dadar West.
The Attacks
Between 6:54 pm and 7:06 pm, three improvised explosive devices detonated, leaving 26 people dead and 130 injured. The blasts were a cowardly attempt to spread fear and chaos in the financial capital of India. The Indian Mujahideen, a terrorist organization, was believed to be behind the attacks, with its co-founder Yasin Bhatkal allegedly playing a key role.¹ ²
The Aftermath
The attacks sent shockwaves across the nation, with people from all walks of life coming together to condemn the senseless violence. The city’s resilience was put to the test as people lined up to donate blood and offer support to the victims. The government swung into action, with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) launching a probe into the attacks.
The Investigation
The investigation was a complex one, with the ATS working tirelessly to uncover the conspiracy behind the blasts. In 2014, the ATS arrested Abdul Mateen Fakki, who was accused of financing the terrorist operation by passing money through hawala sources to Yasin Bhatkal. The same year, the Maharashtra ATS was handed over the custody of Yasin Bhatkal for probing the 2011 Mumbai Bombings Case.
A City United
Despite the tragedy, Mumbai’s spirit remained unbroken. The city’s residents came together to support each other, and the city’s hospitals worked tirelessly to treat the injured. The 13/7 attacks will always be remembered as a dark day in India’s history, but it also showcased the city’s resilience and determination to move forward.
Remembering the Victims
As we reflect on the events of that fateful day, it’s essential to remember the innocent lives lost and the countless others who were affected by the tragedy. May their memory serve as a reminder of the need for peace, unity, and compassion in our society.
